Biographies: Dr Johnny Ilan

(Lecturer in Criminology, University of Kent)

My research interests include ethnography; youth crime, justice and policing; urban sociology and cultural criminology. My goal is to better understand how definitions of the legitimate and illegitimate are mediated through cultural norms. I explore urban ‘street’ cultures, traditional and late-modern working-class cultures, as well as mainstream cultures of control, governance and consumption. The bulk of my research has taken place in city streets, where these cultures most frequently interact and meld; although I am increasingly interested in how they manifest and interact online. As a DJ and music writer, I am interested in exploring how urban and dance musics have been sites of autonomy, resistance and control for several generations.
